United World Against Diabetes (UWAD)

India is known as the diabetes capital of the world, with more than 101 million people living with diabetes and 136 million prediabetic.

United World Against Diabetes (UWAD) is a non-profit organization committed to promoting diabetes care, control, prevention, awareness, education, policies, and scientific research studies.

UWAD empowers underprivileged communities by promoting diabetes healthcare and awareness. We combat diabetes through awareness, early detection, and comprehensive care. By educating communities, providing essential healthcare services, and supporting sustainable diabetes management, particularly in underserved areas, we strive to reduce diabetes prevalence and improve the quality of life for those affected. By training local educators, advocating for policy changes, and leveraging technology, we aim to build healthier, diabetes-free communities.

DIABETES

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that occurs when the body either cannot produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels and allows glucose to enter cells, where it is used for energy.

There are several types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes: This type occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

Type 2 diabetes: This type occurs when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin or the pancreas gradually loses its ability to produce enough insulin.

Gestational diabetes: This type occurs during pregnancy when hormonal changes cause insulin resistance. Gestational diabetes increases the risk of complications during pregnancy and childbirth and can also increase the risk of type 2 diabetes later in life.

DIABETES FREE INDIA MISSION

“Diabetes Free India Mission, an innovative campaign initiated by UWAD on November 14, 2014, commemorating World Diabetes Day, is a pivotal initiative primarily aimed at raising awareness and preventing diabetes. With 95% of diabetes cases in India being type 2, a condition entirely preventable through lifestyle and dietary modifications, early detection emerges as a critical factor. According to a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research released in May 2023, India grapples with approximately 101 million individuals living with diabetes and an additional 136 million in pre-diabetic stages. This campaign serves as a beacon of hope, advocating proactive measures and empowering communities to combat the diabetes epidemic, fostering a healthier and diabetes-free future for India.”

We are also committed to providing education, guidance, monitoring, and essential medical assistance for families to gain confidence in managing diabetes in rural areas and schools.

Veritas Diabetes Prevention & Rural Healthcare Initiative

UWAD, in partnership with The Veritas, is committed to providing medical health check-ups, diabetes awareness, free medicines, and eyeglasses to those in need in rural and remote areas where medical facilities are limited. The goal of this initiative is to raise awareness about diabetes, offer guidance on diet and yoga for diabetes, and provide knowledge to help control blood sugar levels.

Sweet Kid School Initiative

(Type 1 Diabetes School awareness Program)

UWAD aims to provide medicines, nutrition, glucose testing kits, and health education to children from disadvantaged tribal areas and poor families. The current goal of this program is to enable them to become confident and healthy individuals who can participate in mainstream society.

Transforming Elder Diabetes Healthcare

The aim of this project is to improve diabetes management and the quality of life for elderly individuals. This includes reducing complications and hospitalizations related to diabetes, maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and promoting healthy aging while addressing the unique needs of elderly individuals with diabetes.

Bridging Women’s Wellness and Diabetes Care

Bridging Women’s Wellness and Diabetes Care” is a unique initiative on addressing the unique challenges and needs that women face in managing diabetes while also promoting overall wellness. This initiative recognizes that women often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, including care giving, work, and managing their own health.
